PromptPay for Business -- Complete Guide for Online Sellers (2026)
How to accept PromptPay payments on your online store. Covers personal vs corporate PromptPay, fees, slip verification, daily limits, and tax implications for Thai SMEs.
What is PromptPay and why it dominates Thai ecommerce
PromptPay is Thailand's national instant-payment system, launched in 2017 and now used by 95%+ of Thai bank account holders. Customers scan a QR code with their banking app, transfer in seconds, and the seller sees the money instantly -- no credit card processor, no 3% Visa/Mastercard fee, no 3-day settlement.
For a Thai online store, PromptPay should be the default payment method. It is faster, cheaper, and more trusted than international gateways for domestic customers.
Personal PromptPay vs Corporate PromptPay
There are two flavours of PromptPay merchants:
Personal PromptPay (linked to your ID card or mobile number): - Free to set up via any Thai bank app - Daily receiving limit: usually 50,000-100,000 baht - Money goes into your personal account -- mixed with personal income for tax purposes - Good for: side hustles, first 6 months of a new store, sellers earning under 1.8 million baht/year
Corporate PromptPay (linked to a company tax ID or DBD-registered shop): - Requires you to register a juristic person (company) or sole proprietorship - No daily limit - Lower per-transaction fees on large sums - Required if you exceed 1.8 million baht/year (mandatory VAT threshold) - Good for: scaling businesses, anyone planning to invoice corporate clients
How to set up PromptPay for your store
For a personal PromptPay setup (most sellers start here):
1. Open your Thai bank app (Kasikorn K Plus, SCB Easy, Bangkok Bank, Krungthai, etc.) 2. Go to "PromptPay" or "พร้อมเพย์" menu 3. Register either your phone number or national ID as the PromptPay ID 4. In your Rukter dashboard, go to Settings → Payments → PromptPay 5. Enter your PromptPay ID and upload the QR code image (or let Rukter generate one) 6. Toggle "Accept PromptPay" on
Customers will now see a PromptPay QR at checkout. After payment, they upload the bank slip and your dashboard verifies the amount.
Slip verification: protecting against fake transfers
Fake slip apps are a real threat in Thailand. Scammers generate fake transfer slips with photoshopped amounts. To protect yourself:
- Use Rukter's automatic slip verification -- the system checks the slip against the BOT (Bank of Thailand) verification API and confirms the transaction is real - Manual fallback: always cross-check the amount and reference number against your bank app before shipping - Set a payment timeout: orders not paid within 30-60 minutes are auto-cancelled, freeing the stock for the next buyer - Reference number on QR: Rukter embeds the order ID in the PromptPay reference, so you can match incoming transfers to orders instantly
Tax implications: what changes at 1.8M baht
Thai tax law has two big thresholds you need to know:
- 1.8 million baht/year revenue: Mandatory VAT registration. You must charge 7% VAT and file monthly returns. At this point, register as a juristic person and switch to Corporate PromptPay. - Personal income tax thresholds: Income from personal PromptPay flows to your personal tax return. Above 150,000 baht net per year, you owe progressive income tax.
Keep a separate bank account for store sales. Mixing personal and business cash flow is the #1 reason small sellers lose to the Revenue Department audits.
PromptPay vs other Thai payment options
Most Thai stores end up offering 3-4 payment methods. Here is when each shines:
- PromptPay QR (1.65% or free) -- best for most orders, instant, mobile-first - Direct bank transfer (free) -- best for high-value orders where buyers prefer manual control - TrueMoney Wallet (~2%) -- best for younger Bangkok customers who do not use banks - Credit card via Stripe/Omise (3.4%+) -- best for international buyers and customers who want installments - COD (cash on delivery) -- still common in Thai provinces but adds 30-50 baht logistics cost and ~5% return rate
